The Weather Tips

It's the time of year when Riyadh's weather acts unpredictable and we Riyadhians get a feel of living in Europe.

The beauty of rains in Riaydh as captured by www.alriyad.com

Raining, cold winds become a norm, and comes along the soups, coffee and dry fruits. But for toddlers it also brings allergies and cough and flu. Initially I used to get worked up by the never ending flu in the family but now over the years we have learned to enjoy this weather without getting seriously ill. A little bit of desi nifty tips and my girls are all set to take out their umbrellas even in cold rain, but I still do not approve of getting soaked, which they really wanna do :)

So today I'm listing down the contents of my survival kit hoping it might help the others too.

1. Honey and Kalonji (Black Seeds or Nigella Seeds)

Honey is the best thing we can give to our kids. Its my girls' favorite :) And regarding Kalonji (Black Seeds) there is a hadith as follows:

It is authentically reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  them on the authority of Abu Salamah  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him from Abu Hurayrah  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him that the Messenger of Allaah  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam and As-Sam is death."

Daily in the morning first thing I give them is a teaspoon of honey with approx 7 black seeds to give their immune system the necessary boost. My life savers:

2. Mustard Oil

Second tip is a pure Desi Totka wih Mustard oil, Carom seeds also called Ajwain in urdu and Garlic. Take a few peeled cloves of garlic and some Carom seeds and fry them in mustard oil. It will give off a strong smell, keep frying till the cloves turn golden. Then use a sieve or cloth to filter the oil and let it cool. Rub it on the kids' chest and back specially before going to bed. It's quite effective in case of chest congestion.

3. Nasal Drops

Normal Saline nasal drops are a life saver for small babies, they help to clean their nostrils and also help them remain clear throughout the night during flu. Just put a few drops in bot the nostrils when putting the little ones to sleep.

4. Vicks on Feet

If your little ones are coughing through the night apply vicks on their feet and put on socks. They will sleep through peacefully.

Warning: Don't use Vicks for children under three years.

Don't forget to give your feedback and add more useful tips you guys know about. Till then enjoy your life with the little ones :) Bye.
